How to add My Computer/This PC Icon on Desktop in Windows 8/8.1

The term ‘My Computer’ can be termed as a trademark of Windows operating system without any doubt. Though the term was named as ‘Computer’ in the later version of the operating system i.e. those released after Windows XP.
But many among us are still used to the previous term and you will mostly hear or even search for My Computer. But in windows 8/8.1 if you go through your Start Screen or desktop, you will not find any icon of ‘Computer’ on both of them. In this tutorial you will learn how to add ‘Computer’ icon to your desktop as well as start screen.

How to add My Computer to Desktop:
To add ‘My Computer’ icon or to be precise, the ‘Computer’ icon on windows 8/8.1 desktop, you need to right click on your desktop and go to personalise. In the left panel, look for Change desktop icons and click on it.


There you will see a dialogue box opens. Simply check the desired icons that you want to appear on your desktop, and the first one will be ‘Computer’. You can also add Documents or Network icons to your desktop as well.



Click OK, and that is it. Your Computer icon will added to your desktop.

How to add My Computer to Start Screen:
If you are more used to windows 8/8.1 start screen then you may also like adding the ‘Computer’ icon to the start screen of windows 8/8.1. All you need to do is to search for ‘computer’ on your start screen. Once windows finds it for you, right click the icon and you will see a ribbon bar at the bottom of the screen. In the left corner, you will see an option: “Pin to Start”, simply click it and ‘Computer’ icon will be added to your start screen.
Alternatively you can do the same by going to your ‘Computer’ from either by searching on Start Screen or through Windows Explorer and there in the left panel, right click on ‘Computer’ and you will see an option “Pin to Start”.






That’s all and ‘Computer’ icon will be added to your start screen.

Windows 8/8.1 unable to turn off, restart, hibernate or sleep after upgrade

Fix Windows 8 and 8.1 Restart and Shutdown Problems by Disabling “Hybrid Shutdown” Feature.

There are many Windows 8/8.1 users who are complaining about various restart and shutdown issues. Many times their Windows 8/8.1 computers restart themselves as soon as the log in screen appears. Sometimes their computer systems hang while rebooting or shutting down the system.
Most of the times these kind of issues are related with the new "Hybrid Shutdown" feature introduced in Windows 8/8.1. Hybrid shutdown feature of Windows 8/8.1 decreases the total start up time by hibernating the kernel session instead of closing it which reduces the overall Windows loading time because resuming from hibernated system session is very less work compared to a full system initialisation.
But this new feature is causing problems to some computer systems and if you are also facing reboot or shutdown problems in Windows 8/8.1, you can fix it by disabling this new hybrid shutdown feature and doing a complete shutdown.
Just follow these simple steps:

1. If you are on new Start Screen, type power and Windows will automatically search for the term and will show you the results.
If you are on Desktop, move your cursor to top-right corner of screen to access new Charms Bar. Now click on Search option and type power in search box.

2. Now click on Settings link given in right-sidebar of search results page and then click on "Change what the power buttons do" link given in the search results as shown in following screen shot:



3. It'll open Power Options window. You can alternatively open the same window by typing powercfg.cpl in RUN dialogue box and press Enter and then click on the "Choose what the power buttons do" link given in left sidebar.
Now scroll down to bottom and you'll see "Turn on fast start up (recommended)" option given in Shutdown settings section as shown in following screen shot:




4. Disable the option by unchecking the check box and then click on "Save Changes" button.

PS: If the option is not shown or greyed out, scroll up and click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable" link.

5. That's it. Restart your system and your reboot or shutdown problems should get fixed in Windows 8/8.1

Easy and recommended method:

If the above solution doesn't fix your problem, you can try to execute following command in Command Prompt/cmd. Open Command Prompt as Administrator by right-click on the bottom-left corner and select the same option from the Win+X menu then type this command 

bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes

The above mentioned command used to fix a very annoying freezing issue found in Windows8/8.1 Release Preview build. According to Microsoft the issue was fixed in Windows 8 RTM but if you are still facing the issue, you can try the command, It worked in my Windows 8.1 Enerprise N laptop.

But This method which I'm going to tell you does not require any software download
we will just use a cmd to do our process and once our process gets over our corrupted memory card or pen drive will start working correctly....

carefully check out the process and do the same as said step by step( screen shots is also provided)....

Step 1 - Open cmd (not in Admin mode)

Step 2 - Now type diskpart and press enter

Step 3 - A new diskpart cmd window will appear we have to work on this window

Step 4 - Now on this window type list disk and press enter. After you press enter it will show all the hard disk an external storage devices connected to the PC
select the external storage device connect ie. the corrupted memory card or pen drive
you will know this device by just seeing the size of the disk
mostly Disk 1 is the external storage device

Step 5 - Now type select disk 1 and press enter

Step 6 - Now type clean and press enter

Step 7 - Now type create partition primary and press enter

Step 8 - Now type active and press enter

Step 9 - Now type select partition 1 and press enter

Step 10 - Now type format fs=fat32 and press enter
After pressing enter the formatting will start
let the format to get completed

Step 11 - After the completion of format process type exit and press enter
which will exit the window

That's it your memory card or pen drive will start working properly
check out the working by transferring the files into it.

This guide is dedicated to those of us who get stuck and continue trying to solve a problem, only to realise at 3:30am that they have to be up for work in an hour or so.

There is no need to alter Windows 7 whatsoever. Doing so may cause your operating system to act strangely or even crash without notice.

In my quest to fine tune my own systems, I have experienced both of the above and there have been times when I could not understand the reasoning behind those results. As well, all of the listed tips, tricks and tweaks are organised as best thought possible, however, some are more advanced than others. Some require specific skills to work through editing registry settings, working with DOS as well as starting and stopping programs and services which run in Windows 7 background.
Given respect to this, I would advise one to NOT follow this article unless you have the background and knowledge to do so. • Reboot your computer while quickly tapping F8. This will bring you into the Advanced Boot Options where you can select options such as Repair Your Computer, Last Known Good Configuration or booting into Safe Mode where you can do a System Restore to an earlier time;
• Reboot your computer with your Windows 7 disk in the drive. Boot to the disk select the installation you want and then click on repair, or
• Complete a clean install of Windows 7 which, although time intensive, will confirm that your problem is solved and the system is in tip-top shape.

I thought I would leave one of the best shocks in Windows 7 to last, this being a small yet incredibly powerful hidden application called God Mode. God Mode will place a control panel icon on your desktop that has every command available in Windows 7 inside and listed alphabetically. Here is how to get it:

1. Right click on the desktop and select New followed by Folder;
   
2. Open the folder and name it: ‘God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}’; and
3. Once done, the folder will change to that of the Control panel and the user now has immediate access to a word of commands within Windows 7, 281 commands to be exact.
